8 passengers rescued as motorboat drowned in Attaabad Lake

GILGIT, Dec 22 : A motor boat engaged in transportation of goods drowned in Attaabad Lake on Wednesday after striking a big ice berg. However, rescue personnel managed to rescue some eight persons including crew members of the boat.

According to details, a motor boat carrying goods from Hussaini to Hunza drowned near Gulmat after it hit an ice berg present in the Attaabad Lake.

Rescue personnel immediately responding to the incident rescued eight persons present in the boat. Goods worth hundreds of thousand rupees were also destroyed in the incident.

The locals lauded the rescue personnel for saving eight precious lives.

On other hand, the affected people demanded the Gilgit Baltistan government for compensation.

The locals were of the view that they were already adversely hit by landslides and recent floods that deprived them of the lifelong earning and boat capsized incident also robbed them of their remaining earnings.

They also urged the provincial government for taking steps for their rehabilitation at safer places besides providing them alternate livelihood.

It should be mentioned that thousands of people were left homeless in the massive landslides at Attabaad, Hunza on Jan 04 this year, besides damaging the 14 km piece of Karakoram Highway (KKH) halting the trade between Pakistan and China.

KKH is the only land route to China for mutual trade. It should be mentioned that development work on restoring the damaged KKH was underway, but the trade between two countries was also suspended for last 11 months.
