LAHORE, Dec 03 : Lahore Police have thwarted a major terror plot and arrested five militants belonging to outlawed Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
Addressing a press conference here on Friday, the CCPO Lahore Aslam Tareen revealed the arrests of the banned TTP activists. He said police and intelligence agencies raided a house in Ravi Park Shahdarra Town and apprehended five TTP-linked terrorists.
He also informed the media persons that a large cache weapons and explosives including suicide vests, mortar shells, light machine guns and rocket launchers were recovered from the captivity of the detained terrorists.
The CCPO Lahore said that the detained terrorists belonged to Al-Tauheed-wal-Jihad Group of banned Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan. He said the chief of the outfit Dr Omar Tauheedi had already been killed in another operation.
Police claimed that the suspects were involved in carrying out attacks on ISI building in Model Town, FIA building and Rescue 15 office in Lahore. One suspect, Abdul Akram alias Malik Tofan, is a resident of Shahdra, while four others, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Shabir Ahmed alias Hafiz, Umar Hayat alias Qari Ismail and Hafiz Muhammad alias Abu Qasim hailed from Faisalabad. They were staying at Abid Akram's house.
Aslam Tareen claimed that all the detainees were planning to launch terrorist attacks on key installations in the city and religious gatherings during the month of Muharram. Tareen said that the country is in a state of war with the Taliban, and although they cannot guarantee that incidents of terrorism will not take place in the future, however, the police was trying its best to take preventive measures.
Replying a question, the CCPO Lahore Aslam Tareen said that all humanly possible security measures would be taken by the police to maintain peace and tranquility during Muharram.
