Water outflow increases, relief activities underway at Attabad

HUNZA, June 07 : The discharge and inflow of water into the landslide created lake at Attabad have increased raising chances of a breach in the dam, sources said Monday.

Meanwhile, helicopter service has been resumed to shift the affectees to safer places as weather conditions are improving, sources said.

According to sources the discharge of water through the spillway at Attabad Lake has surpassed 5,000 cusecs while the inflow has been exceeded to 5,000 cusecs as with the weather conditions improving, glaciers are melting fast.

“The height of the lake has decreased by two inches,” the NDMA chief said, which shows that the discharge of water is faster than the inflow.

The helicopter service, which was suspended last week due to bad weather, has been resumed to carry out relief activities in Galmat, Shishkat and Phasu areas of Upper Hunza .

Moreover, the Gilgat to Hunza part of Karakorum Highway was opened for traffic from 7:00am to 4:00pm.
