Nawaz Sharif withdraws nomination papers for NA-123

LAHORE, Feb 16 : Former Prime Minister and Pakistan Muslim League-N Quaid Mian Nawaz Sharif has withdrawn his nomination papers for bye-election on National Assembly constituency NA-123, Lahore.

Pakistan Muslim League (N) chief has backed party leader Pervez Malik as his replacement candidate for the same constituency.

Experts believe there could be many reasons that the PML-N leader has withdrawn his nomination for the bye-elections.

They believe, the foremost reason could be that the reported agreement reached between former military president Pervez Musharraf and the Saudi Government, which bars the PML-N leader from taking part in elections.

Other possibilities may be that the PPP government has yet to repeal 17th amendment and the condition of third time prime minister and therefore, Mian Nawaz Sharif is not ready to go to the parliament, until the parliament take a decision on the two matters.

A case on the electoral eligibility of Mian Nawaz Sharif is being heard in the Lahore High Court (LHC), in which a three-member election tribunal of the Lahore High Court has reserved its judgment on Tuesday.

However, political opponents claimed, Nawaz Sharif feared that the court could likely give decision against him therefore he has decided to withdraw his nomination papers. INP
