Govt going for cheap hydro power generation: Pervez Ashraf

ISLAMABAD, Feb 23: Minister for Water and Power Raja Pervez Ashraf has said that the government is concentrating on enhancing hydro power generation to overcome power shortage.

Answering questions in the Senate Tuesday, Perevez Ashraf said work on 4500 megawatt Diamir-Bhasha Dam will be launched by the end of this year. He said work on Neelum-Jhelum Hydro power project is in progress while feasibility and designing work of Kohala Power Project is also underway in which China has shown interest. He said a number of small power projects on the run of water are also being constructed in Azad Kashmir.

The Minister said that the federal government has also embarked on a programme to construct thirty-two medium and small dams throughout the country which would not only preserve water for irrigation but would also generate electricity.

He said the government of Punjab has joined the hands with the federal government to produce cheap hydro power and intends to install 44 megawatt hydro power project at Chashma Link Canal Outfall.

Answering a question Raja Pervez Ashraf said a project for rehabilitation of irrigation infrastructure in the NWFP is being implemented with the approval of ECNEC that would cost Rs 8.4 billion. He said similarly a project for lining of irrigation channels in the province is being executed at a cost of Rs 2.5 billion.

Advisor on Information Technology Sardar Muhammad Lateef Khosa informed the House that the country received foreign direct investment of nineteen point three billion dollars during the last five years. He said this investment was made in oil and gas, power, chemical, transport, communication, textile and construction sectors.
