LAHORE, Jan 27: Punjab cabinet on Wednesday unanimously approved the proposed Local Bodies (Amendment) Bill 2010 in a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif.
Senior provincial minister Raja Riaz, Minister of Law Rana Sanaullah, Minister of Finance Tanvir Ashraf Kaira, Minister for Jails Chaudhry Abdul Ghafoor, provincial chief secretary and I.G. Police also attended the meeting.
Talking to media persons after the meeting, Provincial Law Minister Rana Sanaullah said cabinet has discussed each clause of the bill to make the system transparent.
He said the Local Bodies Elections will be held within six months.
He said that a Local Bodies Election authority will be established and its head will be a qualified person equivalent to Supreme or High Court judge.
He said the provincial cabinet has also hinted at restoration of the Local Bodies system of 1989.
Rana said that the bill will now be tabled in Punjab Assembly for legislation, adding the meeting also discussed the law and order situation in the province.
He said Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif had also given the approval of deployment of administrators to replace Nazims.
He said that the meeting has approved the draft Local Government Bill 2010, which has kept the rural-urban divide in place, adding the cabinet has also decided to establish a system of accountability to monitor performance of the institutions.
