391 terrorism bids foiled, 82 terrorists arrested in Capital in 2009: IG Islamabad

ISLAMABAD, Jan 05 : Business community is playing a vital role in promoting the local economy and Islamabad Police will take every possible measure to address all problems of businessmen.

This was said by Syed Kaleem Imam, Inspector General of Islamabad Police while addressing business community at Islamabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ICCI).

He said Islamabad received 398 threats out of which 391 threats were averted by the proactive approach of police while terrorists succeeded in executing only 7 incidents. He said 82 terrorists were arrested in Islamabad which is the largest capture throughout Pakistan and which shows the good performance of Islamabad police.

Kaleem Imam said 41 policemen lost their lives while performing in the line of duty. He appreciated Prime Minister of Pakistan for announcing a package for the policemen who sacrificed their life while fighting against terrorists and said this gesture will further encourage police force to perform more effectively.

He said Islamabad has 165 entry points and efforts will be made to cover most of these points with scanners, detectors and other gadgets to proactively stop the acts of terrorism. For this purpose, latest technology will be imported in collaboration with NADRA to track down the miscreants. He said private security companies will have to train their guards from Police Training Centers so that they could provide well trained guards to business houses.

He said after 9/11, all focus reverted to Islamabad and our police have to face a new kind of challenge where terrorists were not hesitating from destroying their own life. He said this is a big challenge and though police is short of resources, but it is fully committed to tackle this menace.

He said Citizen Police Liaison Committee will be activated and asked President ICCI to head this Committee for effective resolution of all day to day problems being faced by the businessmen. He said business community should install more cameras in markets and help police in tracking down the terrorists & other culprits.

In his welcome address, Zahid Maqbool, President, Islamabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry said rising acts of terrorism are damaging business activities and discouraging investment, therefore, police should take measures to curb this trend.

He called for equal application of traffic rules on all. He said only those schools should be allowed who own buses for pick & drop of students to discourage one child one car culture as it is creating lot of traffic problems in Islamabad. He said police should ban the smoke-emitting vehicles in Islamabad as they are polluting the environment.

ICCI President said Thana culture should be made more people friendly so that people could come to Police Stations without any hesitation for resolution of their problems. He said Islamabad Police should develop some criteria to approve only those private security companies who provide well trained security guards. He said a comprehensive security should be developed for industrial areas in consultation with ICCI. INP
