Basha-Diamir Dam to be inaugurated on may 24: Chairman Wapda

ISLAMABAD, May 09 : Chairman Wapda Shakeel Durrani has announced on Monday that Basha-Diamir Dam will be inaugurated on May 24, while construction of Karam Tungi dam will start in October-November this year.

Briefing Senate Standing Committee on Water and Power shekel Durrani said currently development of infrastructure including construction of residential colony and roads was in progress around the Basha-Diamir dam project.

He blamed the National Highway Authority for causing a delay of three years for construction of roads which he said was a major setback. He said that the matter regarding awarding of contract for road construction will be reviewed in the next ECNEC meeting.

To a question he replied the consultants for Karam Tungi dam has been selected and the engineering design of the dam has been completed.

Responding to a question he said Rs. 1.10 billion will be required for construction of Munda dam and the donor agencies have assured for provision of finance. He said had the Munda dam constructed Nowshera and other parts of Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa would not have been submerged in the 2010 devastating floods.

With the construction of Munda dam 740 MW power will be generated and would help store 12 lac acre feet water in its reservoir, he added.

Speaking on the occasion, Chairman federal Flood Commission Engineer Alam Khan informed the committee that if the flood similar to last year comes again it devastation would not be possible to stop. He said that Rs. 59 billion had been requested for construction of projects to deter floods
devastation, however he said the requested amount has not been released due to paucity of funds.

To a question he said that measures were being taken to keep safe crops in case flood again hit the country in future.
