7,000 houses being constructed for flood affectees in Kashmore, Kandhkot and Shikarpur: Shireen Narejo

LARKANA April 18 : Seven thousand low cost houses are being constructed in 43 flood-hit villages of Kashmore-Kandhkot and Shikarpur districts and will be completed till June 30, 2011.

Sindh Additional Secretary Planning and Development Dr Shireen Narejo said that small schemes of streets, road networking and latrines and supply of water through installation of hand pumps were also being planned and work will be undertaken to provide good facilities to the flood affected villages. She was talking to journalists after a review meeting of Board of Sindh Rural Support Programme here.

The board meeting was presided over by famous economist Fazullah Qureshi who is chairman of executive committee of Board of Sindh Rural Support Programme, working in different parts of flood-hit districts of Sindh.

Dr Shireen Narejo said different types of projects have been launched in the province at a cost of three billion rupees to reduce poverty under the union council based poverty reduction programme in Shikarpur and Kashmore-Kandhkot districts for 30 months. She said that with a cost of Rs2.5 billion this project was extended towards Tharparkar and Jacobabad which will continue for 30 months. She said that despite using funds on rehabilitation work in flood-hit areas of Sindh, the union council based poverty reduction programme will be launched in other districts of Sindh soon.

Talking to journalists, CEO SRSP Dr Sono Khangharani said that through SRSP thirty thousand youths were trained in different technical fields like mechanic skills, computer skills, radio TV repairing, auto mechanic, while females were being trained at vocational centers like embroidery, Arc work, beatification for beauty parlors, coloring. He said trained women have started to earn money from their skills. He said that SRSP had started construction of total 12,000 houses from Qambar-Shahdadkot to Kashmore districts. He said that 7,000 houses were being constructed in union councils under poverty reduction programme and more 5,000 houses through different donors in flood-hit districts.
