Pak urges UNSG to take notice of desecration of the Holy Quran, calls for steps to check extremist tendencies

UNITED NATIONS, March 23 : Pakistan has drawn the attention of the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to the despicable act of desecration of the Holy Quran in Florida urging him to take all steps to fight such tendencies and promote intercultural and inter-faith harmony that is basic to coexistence of mankind.

Pakistan's Ambassador to the United Nations Abdullah Hussain Haroon in a letter to the Secretary General in pursuance of the President's clear expression of the sentiments of the people of Pakistan and extreme provocation and seriousness of the issue, drew his attention to the despicable act of desecration of the Holy Quran by Wayne Sapp under the supervision of Terry Jones in Florida, USA on Monday.

The Ambassador voiced Pakistan's strong condemnation of the burning of the Holy Quran and expressed Pakistan's profound regret and deep concern at the increasing acts of Islamophobia and growing trend of intolerance and hatred towards Muslims as well as insults to their religious symbols and personalities. The recent infamy, he added is yet another manifestation of this trend, which has deeply hurt the religious feelings of Muslims in Pakistan and around the world.

"While this reprehensible act is the work of extremists and is evidently designed to provoke dissent and discord among communities and peoples across the world, such sacrilegious acts also go against the very concept of inter-faith harmony and threaten the multicultural fabric of the societies and the brotherhood of the United Nations", the letter said.

The Ambassador further added that as a strong active proponent of inter-faith harmony, Pakistan believes that civilized peoples and societies must resist and oppose any tendency towards extremism of any kind. "Pakistan expects that the Administration and American people as well as all civilized societies will take due cognizance and express their revulsion on this
sacrilegious act".

The Ambassador urged the United Nations to play its important role in ensuring peace and harmony among peoples of the world. He said Pakistan has full confidence in the UN's leadership and hoped that it would take all steps to fight such tendencies and promote intercultural and inter-faith harmony that is basic to coexistence of mankind.
