LHC summons Secretary Education in torture of students outside PA

LAHORE, Dec 13 : Lahore High Court (LHC) Chief Justice Ejaz Ahmed Chaudhry Monday summoned Secretary Education in a case regarding police tortured of students and teachers outside Punjab Assembly.

During the hearing of a suo moto notice, the Chief Justice ordered the education secretary to appear before the court today (Tuesday) with a detailed report on the private academies being run by the teachers.

The court directed Punjab government to make teachers a party, who forced the students to take to streets.

Earlier, Additional Advocate General informed the court that teachers were running their private academies in the cover of government jobs. The court said those violating the rules and regulations should be fired from jobs.

During the course of hearing, Punjab government lawyer told the court that the proposed Board of Governor was meant to maintain discipline at the educational institutes and it would in no way, result into rise in the students' fees.

In its report submitted to the court, police said that they tried to prevent the protesting students and teachers from damaging public property.

The Chief Justice remarked that police have the right to stop the protesters, not to beat them.
