PESHAWAR, Dec 03: The Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has approved establishment of Child Protection Centers in four division headquarters of the province in the first phase which would ensure protection of the rights of the child in need in addition to provide them educational, sports and other necessary facilities, while in the next phase such centers will also be set up in each district of the province under recently enacted Child Protection Act.
The Government also launched a Bomb Blast Victims project of physical and psychological rehabilitation of children and women by bomb blasts and other terrorism activities.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Social Welfare, Special Education and Women Development Sitara Ayaz disclosed this while presiding over a meeting with officials of Swiss Development Corporation(SDC) held at the Directorate of Social Welfare on Friday.
Islamabad-based SDC head Andre Huber, SDC National Program Officer, Director Social Welfare, Chief Protection Officer, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, representative of SPARK and other concerned officers attended the meeting.
Expressing interest of SDC in the task of child protection in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and FATA, the SDC head told that keeping in view the requirements of this province SDC had decided to initiate projects in rural development and child protection sectors.
Appreciating this decision, the Minister assured every possible cooperation from her department to make such projects a success and said that the KP Government accords priority to protection of children's rights and their needs as well adding that under this commitment the provincial Assembly had recently passed a comprehensive Child Projection Act.
She said that under this law a Child Protection Commission was established, a Chief Protection Officer was appointed and child protection unites were being setup at district level besides other necessary measures.
She further informed the meeting that in order to help needy children and women by a quick response, a Helpline project has been initiated in Peshawar, Mardan and Swabi districts which will be extended to other districts of the province as soon as the resources are available.
She said that certain programs had also been launched for social and economic empowerment of women folk. The Minister on this occasion sought cooperation of SDC in order to make the children and women protection projects fruitful and also expressed a need to enhance capacity of Social Welfare Department.
Earlier, Director Social Welfare Sajjad Ahmad apprised SDC officials of activities, achievements and future plans of his department.
