19th Amendment bill passed in Senate

ISLAMABAD: Senate Thursday passed the 19th Constitutional Amendment bill unanimously.

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani in his address to the house called the 19th Amendment the New Year gift for the nation.

Gilani said that the passage of two constitutional amendments in a year by the parliament is a great achievement. He said the danger of clash between the state institutions has been averted with passage of the 19th Amendment.

"We doesn't believe in the politics of victimization and there are no political prisoners in jails in this government," Gilani said.

He said the government wants to bring the accountability bill in the parliament. "We have welcomed criticism and will tolerate it in future," he said.

Earlier, leader of the opposition in the house Senator Wasim Sajjad said the government should also reconstitute the election commission.

Earlier, presenting the bill in the house Senator Raza Rabbani said the amendment will make the appointment of the judges more transparent.
