ATC reserves verdict in US nationals case

SARGODHA, June 23: Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Wednesday completed hearing of the terrorism case against five US nationals and reserved verdict, which is likely to be announced today (Thursday).

Earlier, the ATC resumed hearing of the case against five US nationals, who are charged with multiple accounts of terrorism here at district Jail Sargodha amid strict security.

Five US national were nabbed on December 9, 2009 in Sargodha while they were reportedly sneaking into Waziristan to allegedly to get terrorism training.

Police produced the challan registered against the five on March 31, 2009 in the ATC Sargodha.

However, later on keeping in view the security situation Punjab home department ordered to transfer hearing of the case to district Jail Sargodha on February 17, 2009 where the ATC completed hearing of the case.

ATC has recorded statements of at least 19 police witnesses and also recorded statements of captive US nationals allegedly accused of plotting terrorism.

The accused US nationals were identified as Umer Farooq, Waqar Hussain, Aman Hussain, Hussain Yasir and Rami Zamzam.

Members of the American Embassy were constantly following proceeding of the case in district jail amid strict security while a team of physicians was continuously paying visit to examine health of the US captives in jail.

It is also worth mentioning that Khalid Khawjah who was the defense council of the US national was kidnapped and later killed in South Waziristan.

Later, Barrister Dastagir Khachala assumed the charge as defense council of the captive Americans. Barista Khachala while talking to media persons said that ATC has completed the hearing of the case and the court is likely to announce its verdict today (Thursday).

"I am satisfied with the overall proceeding of the captive Americans," the Barrister further said.
