Water gushing out of Hunza Lake spillway

HUNZA: Water has started flowing out from the spillway of Hunza lake with low pressure initially, which is expected to increase with time, says Chairman National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA)on Saturday.Lieutenant General (Rtd) Nadeem said the initial spill of water will not be more than 300 cusecs, the chairman of NDMA said.The water flow is expected to increase as the time progresses, he said. The highest pressure of water spill will be seen within 12 hours, he said. Arrangements have been completed to cope with any emergency that may arise and the situation was being thoroughly monitored by the departments concerned. He said that all preparations have been made to avoid losses of life in flooding water. The bigger stream of water can inundate nearby villages and other areas, he said. The evacuation of people from the threatened areas have been completed. The local administration has warned the people of nearby Suleman Abad, Jonal, Nomal and Diamir to avoid to visit the river area. Chief Minister of Gilgit Baltistan Syed Mehdi Shah has said the administration has built hurdles to stop the water. Presently the lake receiving 3000 cusecs water, he added.
