Gilani vows relief package for GB

GILGIT, May 21 : Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani said on Friday that a relief package would soon be announced for the Hunza Lake affectees, and added that the spillway strategy would be successful to help rescue the people of the area.

After inaugurating Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Lungar at Hunza Relief Camp, Prime Minister Gilani said that following the damage assessment a compensation package would soon be announced for the Hunza lake affectees and assured funds from the federal government on priority.

He said that the Federal government would extend all-out support to the locals in this hour of need.

He said that the Lungar would stay till complete rehabilitation of the affectees. He added that health insurance and electricity bills would also be included in the Benazir Income Support Programme.

Prime Minister said that twenty two kilometers stretch of damaged portion of Karakoram Highway would be repaired as soon as the water recedes. He also promised generation of economic activity so that the people who have suffered financial loss may stand up on their feet.

He said the loss is being assessed, adding that Karakoram Highway would be renovated soon.

Prime Minister admitted that the government could not provide funds for development works due to difficult national situation, and regretted the delay in disbursement of the funds for the Gilgit Baltistan and assured that allocations would be made for the people in the budget.

He also announced Rs. 100,000 aid package for each family of Shishkit and Aenanbad affected by water of Attabad Lake .

Prime Minister Gilani also prayed for those killed in the natural calamity and appreciated the courage with which the people braved the disaster. He said it was a temporary phase and they would be able to return to their homes soon.

Later, addressing Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly and Council's joint session, Prime Minister said federal and provincial governments will take all possible steps for the help and prosperity of people of the affected areas.

He stated that political rights had been given to people of Gilgit-Baltistan and appealed to all political parties to cooperate in helping affectees of Attabad Lake .

On the occasion, the Prime Minister announced establishment of NADRA and Passport offices in Diamer district. He said affectees of Diamer Bhasha Dam will be compensated very soon.
