2nd blast hits JI rally in Peshawar; 20 die

PESHAWAR: At least 20 people were killed, a DSP and local leaders of Jamat-e-Islami among them, and over 40 injured as an explosion ripped through a busy market where JI was holding a protest rally, Monday.

The blast took place in Qissa Khawani Bazaar from where the rally taken out against prolonged power outages was passing.

DSP Gulfat Hussain and JI dist Peshawar’s Naib Amir, Haji Dost Muhammad were killed in the deadly blast while provincial secretary JI Shabbir Ahmed Khan and another local leader Sabir Hussain Shah suffered injuries.

Those injured were rushed to Lady Reading Hospital where emergency has been declared. Hospital authorities say 20 deadbodies were shifted to the hospital while several injured are still being shifted.

Dozens of policemen were also wounded while providing security to the protest rally, police officials said.

On the other hand, in-charge Edhi Foundation Peshawar said some 25 bodies were shifted to the hospital, fearing that more than 40 could be injured in the blast.

It is the second consecutive blast that rocked the city.

A bomb exploded earlier Monday outside a school run by a police welfare foundation in Peshawar, killing a young boy and wounding 10 other people.
