Lawyers community observes Freedom of Judiciary Day

ISLAMABAD, March 09: The lawyers fraternity on Tuesday observed Freedom of Judiciary Day across the country to pay tribute to Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry who was asked to resign by the then military General Pervez Musharraf on the same day 3 years ago.

The call to observe the Freedom of Judiciary Day was given by the Supreme Court Bar Association.

All the High Courts across the country organized conventions in which lawyers vowed to continue their efforts to assure judiciary’s freedom.

A ceremony was held in the National Press Club Islamabad which was attended by renowned lawyer and senior PPP leader Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan, PML-N spokesman Siddiqul Farooq, PPP leader Dr Israr Shah, President Supreme Court Association Qazi Anwar, prominent lawyer Athar Minallah and representatives of the journalist community.

Speaking on this occasion, Aitzaz Ahsan said that the President could only be removed through impeachment, and added that lawyers movement for freedom of judiciary is still continuing.

He also hailed role of Pakistani armed forces in war on terror, as no man with reason can ever support those fanatics who beheaded the innocent people in Swat. He said process for appointment of judges should be altered and Constitutional Reforms Committee with Senator Raza Rabbani in chair is performing well, he added.

Aitzaz Ahsan urged parliament, executive, media, judiciary and legal fraternity to play their due role while remaining within their constitutional ambit and imposed self accountability

He said that still refiorms are needed at lower judiciary to address the masses grievances.

The PML-N spokesman, Siddiqul Farooq said that the PPP government already wasted two years. He said had the constitutional reforms made earlier, including abolishing of 17th Amendment and 58(2)(b), the prevailing situation would have not surfaced.

Representatives of journalist community said that media played a viable and significant for restoration of judiciary in the country, however, he complained that journalists were not given their salaries even after passing five to six months despite their hectic work.

A ceremony was held in Supreme Court which was presided over by Supreme Court Bar Association President Qazi Anwar.
