PM launches anti polio campaign

ISLAMABAD, Feb 15 : Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani has said the PPP government is committed to the health and well being of the mother and the child.

Launching the three day national anti polio campaign here on Monday, Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani said investing in this most important and vulnerable segment of our society is indeed investing in the Health and future of Pakistan.

He said the government will allocate substantial resources in strengthening and initiating all programs aimed at protecting and preserving the health of children and mothers. He said the "Prime Minister's Action Plan" to stop polio must be scaled up this year and taken down to the district level. He expressed the confidence that the provincial and district governments will gear up their efforts to make the country polio free.

Prime Minister Gilani said that as per PPP manifesto, the government accords the highest priority to the health and education sectors. Provision of quality education and health-care to the masses at their doorsteps is the vision of our Shaheed leaders Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto. He said it was with this objective in mind that our Shaheed Chairman in the 1970s established a network of Basic Health Units so that health-care is brought within the access and reach of the poor and the hapless.

He said the Polio Eradication Initiative was envisioned by Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto when thousands of Pakistani children were falling prey to this terrible disease that was crippling them for life. He said the number of polio cases has dropped significantly as a result of this campaign. He said he is mindful of the challenges being faced by the health workers during the polio campaign in areas of unrest. He said it is a matter of great satisfaction that the campaign has resumed in Swat after a year and we are fast campaigning in areas cleared by our brave soldiers in FATA.

The Prime Minister also appreciated the services of different organizations and corporate sector in making the polio campaign a success story.

During the three day campaign, thirty one million children under the age of five years will be administered polio drops.
