Gilani announces withdrawal of Presidential notification on judges appointments

ISLAMABAD, Feb 17 : The government on Wednesday withdrew notification about the appointment of judges to the superior judiciary and accepted recommendations of the Chief Justice of Pakistan Mr Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry by elevating Justice Saqib Nisar and Justice Asif Khosa to the Supreme Court.

This news was broken to the nation while briefing the media persons by the Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani after three hours long meeting with Chief Justice of Pakistan at the Prime Minister House here.

Premier Gilani said, “we have held a meeting with the Chief Justice of Pakistan as part of a consultative process according to the Constitution”.

The Prime Minister said it was also agreed to appoint Justice Khalilur Rehman Ramday, who retired a week back would be appointed ad hoc judge of the Supreme Court for one year.

“The situation of confrontation between the government and the judiciary is over, and I think that it is in the best interest of the country and the nation,” PM Gilani said.

Justice Khawaja Sharif will remain Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court.

The Prime Minister said his meeting with the Chief Jsutice was part of the consultation process for appointment of judges to the superior judiciary to fulfill the constitutional requirement. He said they have fulfilled this requirement and appointments to the Supreme Court agreed upon.

He said judges to the vacant post in the Lahore High Court and Sindh High Court will be notified as consultation process has already been completed about them.

Replying to a question about impact of this decision, he said this was in the best interest of Pakistan , the nation and all the political forces in the country. It will strengthen and stabilize the system. He said the matter was resolved with consensus and the crises completely over.

To another question, there is complete harmony and cooperation between the President and the Prime Minister. He said all the issues have been resolved in the greater interest of Pakistan .

To yet another question as to whether the issue of implementation of the SC verdict on NRO came under discussion, the Prime Minister said the government will fully implement the judges.

He said for the larger interest of the country it is responsibility of the government, political parties including opposition to take decisions on important issues jointly.

Asked to comment on the statements by the PML-N leadership against the President and the government, he said the opposition has a role to identify weaknesses of the government and they are fulfilling their duty.

He said as Pakistan passing through evolution, there is judicial and media activism. He said it is important that all institutions of the state worked together in harmony.
