World Romania to send 600 more troops to Afghanistan

BUCHAREST: The Romanian president's Web site says the country will send 600 more troops to Afghanistan this year, bringing its number of soldiers there to more than 1,600.

Romania, a NATO member, first sent troops to Afghanistan in 2002. It now has 1,020 soldiers there.

The Supreme Defense Council made the decision Thursday. Romania has been an ally of the United States in Afghanistan and Iraq.
