FAISALABAD Jan 21 : Undercooked eggs and poultry products are playing havoc with human lives as 46 percent of patients of various diseases caused by the usage of poultry food fall victims to a bacterium named Salmonella enteritides, according to a research.
As many as 46 percent of patients of various diseases caused by contaminated poultry food products fall victims to a bacteria named Salmonella enteritides, according to a research. The research was conducted by PhD scholar Farkhanda Akhtar who completed her research under the supervision of Prof. Iftikhar Hussain, Department of Microbiology, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad. The bacteria responsible for an outbreak of various diseases including diarrhea, high fever etc, attacks an individual from eight to 48 hours.
The study was conducted over a period of 20 months and during this period, samples were collected from the poultry eggs, meat, poultry dropping, bakery products and human stools samples from diarrhea patients. The stool specimens were collected from 125 people suffering from diarrhea at various hospitals of Faisalabad.
The study on human cases included 125 patients; 44 samples were found positive for S. Entertidis. Out of 125 cases, 45 cases ( 36% ) consumed poultry eggs (in raw and undercooked form), 28 (22.5%) consumed the poultry meat, 10 (8%) consumed bakery products, 12 (9.6%) consumed contaminated water, 8 (6.4 % ) patients consumed contaminated milk, 12 (9.6% ) patients has poor household cooking conditions and 10 ( 8%) patients has infected from unknown cause.
