Screening of Pak nations in US to damage Pak-US ties: Ahsan Iqbal

ISLAMABAD, Jan 11: The PML-N leader and the Spokesman Ahsan Iqbal on Monday said that the United States should consider Pakistan as his partner to resolve all issues in the region but not to take it as a problem.

Talking to the US Congressional delegation, which called on him in Punjab House here, Ahsan Iqbal said screening process of Pakistanis at the US airports had given birth to serious reservations in the people of Pakistan .

“The US should avoid taking such measures which could damage the mutual trust between the people of Pakistan and the United states", he said.

The US delegation was lead by Mr. Senator Carl Levin. Other members of the delegation comprised of Senator Al-Franken, Mr. Rick Debobes, Mr. Bill Monahan and Mr. Jeff Lonmanaco. The US Ambassador to Pakistan Anne. W. Peterson was also present in the meeting with PML-N leader.

Hailing the media role in building public opinion, Ahsan Iqbal said, “media has played an important role in transforming the way, peoples use to think. Pakistani society has gone through many changes and US must recognize a newly emerged Pakistan emerged on the globe during the past 8 years”.

“People have become more vigilant and aware in the knowledge and information era. No stronger and sustainable relations could be built without winning hearts of the Pakistani people", he stressed.

The PML-N spokesman said that PML-N had been consistently advocating building of good relations with the United States based on mutual trust and self-respect.

He said that Pakistanis are against all the facets of extremist and we as a nation always have longed for sustainable peace in the whole region. Pakistan and Pakistanis have paid hefty price for their fight against terrorism. US should respect these sacrifices and recognize Pakistan as a peaceful nation and a peace loving country.

“Pakistan needs substantive support to build and strengthen democratic institutions and extend its cooperation in education, research and development for this purpose”, he said.

He said the PML-N believes in strengthening democracy through building and strengthening institutions.

“We believe that Pakistani Parliamentarians can benefit from established democracies like US and other western countries. This can be done through closely observing ongoing democratic processes in such democracies”, he added.

Ahsan Iqbal apprised the US delegation of the need of stronger interaction, regular visits and closer ties between the Members of Parliament of Pakistan and Members of parliaments members of friendly countries.

He said that it was necessary in order to forge a closer people’s to people contact between the two countries.

He emphasised the role of Parliamentary committees in improving oversight of executive branch and ensuring that the legislative process is democratic and safeguards the public interest. He suggested that Pakistan and the US should exchange parliamentary delegations to learn and benefit from each other’s experience and democratic traditions.

“This would help in evolving broader consensus between the lawmakers of both the countries”, Ahsan Iqbal maintained.INP
