Power, gas outages adding to masses woes

ISLAMABAD, Jan 04 : Despite the tall claims by the government regarding end to the power load shedding by December 31, 2009, nation is still facing massive problems owing to the prolonged and unannounced power and gas outages in the most areas of country amidst acute cold weather.

The duration of power outages in urban areas reached eight hours whereas in rural areas around ten to fifteen hours load shedding is being done.

According to sources, the worst power crisis is prevailing in the country, while the people suffering acutely due to gas outages.

The power outages also have badly affected the business activities in the country. The agriculture is also being adversely impacted owing to the closure of tube wells and other agricultural equipments.

Around 14 Tarbela power units are shut reducing the power generation to cut of 98 percent with 130megawatts.

According to Ministry of Water and Power sources, the shortage of water in dams has reduced the hydel power generation from 6,640MW to 630megawatt.

The load shedding has also caused the closure of hundreds of rice mills in Balochistan areas including Naseerabad, Jafarabad, Jhal Magsi and Sibbi; also, thousands of laborers have been forced out of jobs owing to the persisting load shedding-spawned problems.

Also, in thermal power units, the power generation has been reduced to 2,000MW due to limited gas supply resulting into a collective shortfall of 3,700megawatts. Meanwhile, the gas pressure has greatly been lessened owing to intensity in cold, which is badly affecting the domestic consumers. INP
