Govt does not seem sincere in judges’ appointment: Justice Khawaja Sharif

LAHORE, Jan 27: Chief Justice Lahore High Court (LHC) Justice Khawaja Muhammad Sharif has said that the government did not seem sincere in implementing the summary regarding the appointment of new LHC judges.

During the hearing of a case here on Wednesday, Khawaja Sharif said that there was shortage of judges in Lahore High Court. Due to the fact, the judges had to work till late evening to dispose of the huge workload and to deal with many urgent cases.

He deplored that the government was not enforcing the summary sent to it by the judiciary regarding judges’ appointment.

According to reports there is scare shortage of judges in LHC and only 24 judges were currently working against the required number or 60 judges.

Among the 24 present judges of LHC four were not working to underway case of Provisional Constitutional Ordinance (PCO) which has worsened the situation further.

Whereas 12 among the functional LHC are additional judges whose one year contract would be completed in September 2010.

Meanwhile, filling the vacant position of Supreme Court (SC) judge Justice Khaleelur Rehman Ramday from LHC would further decrease the number of judges in LHC.
