Burney announced $ 100,000 for Haiti earthquake affectees

ISLAMABAD, Jan 14 : The United Nations Expert Advisor on Human Rights and Chairman of the Ansar Burney Trust, Mr. Ansar Burney announced $100,000 for immediate emergency relief to help those affected in Haiti earthquake, and believe to send more in coming days.

The quake, measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale, struck 15km southwest of the capital on Tuesday, Jan 12.

Pakistan’s former Federal Minister for Human Rights, Mr. Ansar Burney said that it is still too early to give the full details of the damage, but Ansar Burney Trust is expecting very high loss of life, widespread destruction of homes, schools and other buildings, and major damage to key water, electricity and road systems.

UN Expert Advisor on Human Rights, Mr. Ansar Burney said that Haiti is already one of the poorest countries, ranking lower than Bangladesh and Kenya on the United Nation’s human development index. Most people in Port-au-Prince live in flimsy slum housing, so an earthquake of this magnitude is catastrophic.

He said that people urgently in need of food, drinking water, blankets, shelter and medical supplies.

UN Expert Advisor on Human Rights, Mr. Ansar Burney further said that thousands are still missing including the chief of the U.N. mission in Haiti, Hedi Annabi, but it is not confirm yet that Annabi had died. Mr. Burney said some 100 - 150 people were in the UN building when the quake struck.

Ansar Burney said that several bodies had already been recovered from the wreckage of the U.N. headquarters. INP
