NATO makes first handover in Afghanistan

Kabul :Afghanistan started to take control of its own security Sunday, as NATO handed off one of the country's most peaceful areas to Afghan security forces.

A ceremony handing off the central province of Bamiyan was not announced in advance and was not carried live on any television channel. Only a few journalists were invited.

The BBC's Jonathan Beale, who was in attendance, said the ceremony included speeches from ministers who had made the journey from Kabul. They stressed the importance and significance of the moment and said it would strengthen Afghanistan's sovereignty.
