10 Police Killed in Helmand Car Bombing

Kabul :At least ten Afghan policemen and one child were killed in a suicide car bomb blast carried out on Helmand police headquarters on Sunday morning, local officials said.

The blast took place in Lashkargah the capital of Helmand province at 08:30 am local time, when a suicide car bomber detonated his explosives at Helmand police headquarters, Dawood Ahmadi, Helmand governor's spokesman told TOLOnews reporter.

Seven other policemen and two Afghan civilians were wounded in the attack, he added.

Two cars were also damaged in the attack and police forces blocked the area.

Officials said that the blast occurred in front of the heavily-guarded office of the police chief as a police vehicle entered the compound.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.

Lashkargah is one of the seven areas that Afghan security forces have recently taken over from foreign forces.

Violence has increased in the country as militants have been targeting Afghan key officials, government sites and Afghan and foreign forces.

Foreign forces are to hand over full security responsibilities to Afghan forces by the end of 2014.
