RAMALLAH, (- Maxwell Gaylard, the UN Humanitarian and Resident Coordinator for the occupied Palestinian territory, has called for protecting Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails especially women and minors.
Gaylard said in a press release on Monday that the law should be applied to all prisoners regardless of the reasons for their detention in harmony with the international law for human rights and the international humanitarian law.
He said that blocking visits by relatives to prisoners ran contrary to the international humanitarian law, explaining that the step isolates the prisoners from their families and leads to breaking up family ties.
The UN official described as worrisome the imprisonment of 200 children less than 18 years old and 37 women. He said that minors should be accorded special protection.
