ISLAMABAD: Three main opposition parties on Tuesday staged walked out of the National Assembly session against current hike in petroleum prices, describing it economic burden on poor masses.
The government on Monday increased by 9.9 per cent the prices of all petroleum products in a bid to pass on the partial impact of the steep rise of international oil prices.
The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan Muslim League – Quaid (PML-Q) and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) staged token walk out from the NA session.
Talking to newsmen outside the parliament, MQM leader Haider Abbas Rizvi said despite assurance by the Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani that the fuel price issue would be presented before a parliamentary committee, the promise was not fulfilled.
“The fresh raise is a heavy burden inflicted on poor masses already suffering from economic worries…this will not be accepted,” he said.
He warned that MQM could announce its future plan of action if government did not take the decision back.
The legislators belonging to these parties registered their protest over the move, saying it would further aggravate the already soaring prices in the country.
PML-N’s Aftab Sheikh urged the government to seriously reconsider the hike.
PML-Q’s Sheikh Waqas Akram endorsed the views of PML-N and MQM regarding the increase in the prices of petroleum products and asked the government not to opt for such ventures.
Awami National Party’s female legislator Bushra Gohar said the ANP should have been taken into confidence over the move.
