15 suspected militants killed in 3 US drone strikes marking beginning of New Year, 2011

MIRANSHAH, Jan 01 : Marking the beginning of the New Year, US drone launched three attacks on Saturday, targeting two suspected hideouts of the militants in North Waziristan Agency (NWA) killing some 15 suspected militants.

Source said that around 15 suspected militants were killed and several sustained injuries when US unmanned predator drone targeted Mandikhel and Ghoristi areas of North Waziristan.

The first attack took place in Mandikhel area of Spinwam near Thall city when a US drone targeted a vehicle, killing at least eight at the spot.

“US drone fired four missiles at the vehicle, damaging the vehicle completely which caught fire,” sources said and confirmed that at least eight suspected militants were killed and several were injured in the attack.

Locals remained busy in recovering the dead bodies of the suspected militants killed in the drone strike that another attack occurred at the same spot, killing four rescuers at the movement. Thus the death toll as a result of two attacks raised to 12 while number of injured was not yet ascertained.

Mandikhek and the surrounding area were considered to be a stronghold of the Haqqani network. Security officials said the men killed in this strike are thought to be attached to militant commander Hafiz Gul Bahadur.

The third attack was carried out by US drone in Ghorista area near Tehsil Mir Ali of North Waziristan where US drone targeted a suspected house. The US drone fired two missiles at the suspected house, killing at least three at the spot.

Locals rushed to the targeted place to rescue the injured and to recover the dead bodies of the deceased.

Sources said that more than 100 drone strikes killed over 670 people in 2010, as compared to 45 strikes that killed 420 in the year 2009.

The US strikes are deeply unpopular among the masses, who see military action on Pakistani soil as a breach of national sovereignty and say some attacks have killed innocent civilians.

Washington says the strikes have killed a number of high-value targets, including the former Chief of Tehrek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Baitullah Mehsud.
