2011 to be a crucial year in Afghanistan: Cameron

LONDON Dec 31 : British Prime Minister David Cameron has called for a renewed effort against home-grown Islamic extremists in Britain in 2011.

In his New Year's message, Cameron called on the overwhelming majority of British Muslims who detest extremism to help counter the threat from some young British Muslims who might carry out terrorist crimes.

Cameron said Britain also continues to face a serious threat from international terrorism, and that police and intelligence agencies continue to work around the clock to thwart potentially damaging plots.

The British leader added that 2011 will be what he called a "crucial year" in Afghanistan, as British troops begin to transfer their security responsibilities to Afghan forces and start preparing to withdraw from the country.
