Govt decides to further hike sugar price by Rs 5/kg in Utilities Stores in Dec

ISLAMABAD, Nov 29 : The government has decided to hike the price of sugar by Rs 5/kg at the Utility Stores outlets, however the final decision to this effect will be taken in the upcoming meeting of Economic Coordination Committee (ECC), which will add to the suffering of the people already suffering from unabated inflation.

The government's intention to further hike the price of the sweetener came to surface during reply to questions asked by the members of the National Assembly Standing Committee for Industries and Production from the federal minister Mir Hazar Khan Banarani. The meeting was presided over by standing committee Chairman Ghous Baksh Mehr.

The lawmakers severely criticized the government for its failure to control the uncalled for soaring prices of items of daily use and expressed grave concern over sugar crisis in the country.

Federal Minister for Industries and Production Mir Hazar Khan Bijrani during the meeting of standing committee for industries and production said that he was not responsible for the hike in sugar price, adding that he has no authority to check the prices of commodities.

"The provinces had not kept their stock at satisfactory level, thus provided a chance to the sugar mafia to sell sugar at a price of their choice and also caused sugar crisis," Bijrani said that provinces were responsible to control prices of various items and also blamed provinces responsible for creating sugar crisis.
