Scores of NATO oil trucks set alight by gunmen in Pakistan

A convoy of oil tankers in south-western Pakistan has been attacked by gunmen seeking to prevent the oil reaching NATO troops in Afghanistan.

Around 30 tankers were set alight by the gunmen in the town of Sibi just before dawn Saturday.

"The attackers first fired shots and then fired small rockets at the tankers, 28 to 29 tankers caught fire," said local Pakistani official Neem Sherwani, speaking to Reuters.

Sherwani said there were around 20 gunmen involved in the attack.

The oil convoy was bound for the Chaman crossing on the Afghan border. NATO convoys usually use the closer Torkham crossing in the north-west, but the Pakistani government closed the crossing after NATO helicopters entered national airspace in September and shot dead two border guards.

NATO apologised, saying they'd thought the guards were militants, but the incident provoked strong anti-NATO sentiment across the country and the government closed the main crossing..
