Karachi: 12 die in Shershah market shootout

KARACHI: At least 12 people were killed and many injured in a firing incident at Shershah market, taking the death of current terror spate to 30 during the last 24 hours.

The recent incident took place in Shershah market area where unknown bikers opened indiscriminate fire on shopkeepers, killing 10 and wounding more than a dozen, police said.

Arif Razzaq, a police official said the death toll may rise as some of the injured were in critical condition. The attackers easily managed their escape, eyewitnesses said.

Heavy contingents of police and Ranger arrived at the scene and cordoned off the area. Edhi and other rescue services shifted the deadbodies to hospitals where emergency was declared.

Medics in Civil Hospital said 12 people were received dead at emergency ward of the hospital.

Severe tensions prevailed in the city prompting traders to pull down shutters and residents to stay indoors in affected localities.

The metropolis also witnessed crippling traffic jam at Nazimabad, Baldia, Sher Shah, Sadar and Shahrah-e-Faisal mainroads.

SSP Naveed Khawaja told reports on the spot that some shopkeeper denied giving extortion money to some politically-backed dacoits, “which might be a motive behind the incident”.

He said an ‘operation cleanup’ had been kicked off in the area against the offenders.

Earlier today, unknown gunmen shot dead more than 18 people in Malir, Landhi, Orangi Town, Ranchhor Line, Azizabad, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Sohrab Goth and Lea Market areas.

The killing on Monday and Tuesday took place when armed men kidnapped members of the opposing factions and dumped their bodies after executing them.
