44 die, dozens missing in flash floods, torrential rains

DHAKA, June 15 : At least 44 people were killed and dozens other went missing in Bangladesh after heavy rains caused widespread flash floods and triggered by heavy rains here on Tuesday.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Cox's Bazar Giasuddin Ahmed, 13 people died and seven were injured when landslides struck at Ukhia and Teknaf as a result of two days' heavy rain. Five members of one family also thought to have died in the landslide in Ukhia upazila's Palangkhali.

Five bodies, whose identity was not yet known, were also recovered from another locality. The bodies of those who died could not be identified yet.

Many parts of the Teknaf-Cox's Bazar Highway submerged by heavy water due to overnight rain, local police officer Nazim said. He said 19 of 27 villages in Palangkhali Union have been submerged.

Police and other officials of disaster management authorities started relief and rescue operation in the affected areas and started evacuation of the people to the safer places.
