Zardari reiterates pledge for political, socio-economic uplift of FATA

ISLAMABAD, Feb 22: President Asif Ali Zardari has reiterated the commitment of the democratic government for the socio-economic uplift of the Tribal people and their political empowerment. He added that the people of tribal areas would be brought at par with the people of other parts of the country in terms of development.

He made these assertions when a three member delegation of FATA parliamentarians called on President Zardari at Aiwan-e-Sadr on Sunday.

The delegation included Senator Abdul Raziq Afridi, Senator Engr. Rashid Ahmed and Senator Hafiz Rasheed Ahmed. Senator Sardar Ali Khan and senior government officials were also present in the meeting.

Matters relating to developmental projects, , political reforms, the ongoing fight against militancy and law and order situation in tribal areas and rehabilitation of IDPs in tribal areas came under discussion during the meeting. They also urged an early implementation of the political reforms announced by the President n the eve of the Independence Day last year.

On this occasion, the President said that political reforms in FATA had been decided in principle and their implementation will be undertaken as soon as the situation stabilized further.

While talking about the fight against militancy, the President lauded the service of the tribal people in the fight against militancy and said that the Government was focusing on education as it was the most important tool for defeating the militant mindset.

He said that we are committed to long term measures to reform the militant mindset through education, social and political reforms and giving people ownership in mega development projects through public private partnership.

The members of the delegation thanked the President for his keen interest in the uplift of FATA. They also demanded for more developmental funds for FATA parliamentarians.
