GAZA, - The World Health Organization (WHO) has said that the Israeli siege on Gaza Strip and the latest war on it had led to a serious deterioration in the already terrible living conditions in the Strip.
The organization in a report on Monday said that Gaza's economy was on a downward spiral as the rate of unemployment reached 41.5% in the first quarter of 2009 while the poverty rate soared to 70% among families living with less than a dollar per day for each person according to statistics of May 2008.
The report warned of increasing salinity and nitrates in water of underground wells, which mostly affects children.
WHO revealed that Gaza hospitals suffer shortage in necessary medical equipment and a retreat in training after the health teams were isolated from the outside world.
Treatment for many serious illnesses such as heart surgeries and cancer treatment are not available in Gaza and many of those patients are asked to find treatment outside the Strip, which in most cases were refused or delayed by Israel, the UN organization underlined.
