No rift with army, all institutions working within their framework: PM

ISLAMABAD, Jan 02 : Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has said there is no rift between civilian government and army and they enjoy good relations.

Talking to media here on Saturday, the Prime Minister rebutted speculations of misunderstanding and said if need be they will prove that they are together.

“We have good relations amongst us and if any talks about that, we will prove that we are together”, Gilani emphatically stated.

He said army is playing its role efficiently. He said the army, the judiciary, the parliament and other departments are national institutions and working with in their own jurisdiction and there is no question of any rift. He said no one has gone out of its respective area.

The Prime Minister said he is comfortable with the present situation because people are with the Government. He said they also respect mandate of the people in the four provinces.

He said the people have elected them for five years and if they come up to the expectations of the people, they would re-elect the PPP and if the party failed to fulfil its promises mentioned in the manifesto, people would reject them.

Replying to a question, Gilani said that he is two hundred percent sure to repeal the 17th amendment from the Constitution. He said the President has also stated this categorically.

He said the Constitutional Reforms Committee with representation of all the political leadership including the Nationalist Parties of Balochistan is holding consultations on constitutional amendments and there is no deadlock.

He said restoration of the 1973 constitution in its original form given by late Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto would be another big achievement of the democratic government after the historic National Finance Commission Award. He said the 1973 constitution guarantees national stability, integrity and unity among the federating units.

The Prime Minister said he has full faith in the political leadership of the country and there is no question of any mistrust among them.

Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani lauded the sacrifices of Police and F.C. personnel in the war against terrorism and announced to enhance the compensation for the martyrs to Rs 2 million from Rs 500,000.

He said the families of Shuhada would be given permanent shelter and their Matriculate sons would be given jobs in Police. He said he had enhanced the compensation package keeping in view the plight of the heirs of the martyrs and for this reason he also visited the deceased families.

He said children of the martyr police personnel will be given three hundred thousand rupees for their education.

The Prime Minister also said that the children of the martyrs who were appointed as Constables on the basis of Metric qualification will be promoted to the rank of Assistant Sub Inspector

He said capacity of police force would be enhanced and for this purpose their training schools would be upgraded.

To a question he said the American experts still continue to provide training to Police personnel in anti terrorism operations but the site of the training has been changed from Sihala College to another place.

He said the world recognizes the ability and resolve of Pakistan to eliminate terrorism and agree that there is need to help it in increasing the capacity of the law enforcement agencies of the country. He said the entire nation is against terrorism and there is no soft corner for terrorists in any section of the society.

He said he doubled the salary of Islamabad Police and made equal to their counterparts in Punjab as an incentive.

Earlier, the Prime Minister visited the residences of Police Inspector Muhammad Safdar and constables Ilyas and Manan in Islamabad who were martyred in terrorist attacks in the capital. He offered fateha for the departed souls and condoled with the bereaved families..

The Prime Minister also directed the concerned authorities for the construction of two thousand flats in the capital to provide residential accommodation to the police personnel on ownership basis.
