RAHIMYAR KHAN, Jan 23 : Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has reiterated that all institutions will be strengthened to work within the ambit of the constitution, 17th amendment will be repealed and article 58-2b removed to strengthen democracy.
He was addressing a public meeting after performing the ground breaking ceremony of Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Bridge over Indus river in Chachran Sharif, District Rahim Yar Khan Saturday afternoon.
Shaheed Benazir Bhutto bridge will be constructed at a cost of 5.8 billion rupees in two and a half year period. It will reduce the distance between Rahim Yar Khan and Rajanpur by 103 kilometers.
The Prime Minister said 1973 constitution, given by Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali bhutto, guarantees the integration and unity among the federating units and the PPP government will not only restore it in its original shake but also safeguard it. He said the 17th amendment will be repealed to restore the constitution in its true spirit.
Mr. Gilani said that the dictators derailed the democracy but now the responsibility lies on the shoulders of the politicians to shield it. He said the PPP led government will continue to pursue the path of reconciliation for political stability and sustainable democracy in the country. He said all the institutions including the parliament and the media will be strengthened and there will be no matter of concern if they work within their constitutional ambit.
He said the government is fully aware of the problems of the masses including price hike, unemployment, poverty and injustices and will take all necessary steps to address them. He said the people have elected the PPP for five years and after completion of the tenure, the people will judge us on the basis of our performance.
The Prime Minister said the government has launched unprecedented number of development projects particularly in the backward areas to put the country on the path of progress and prosperity.
He said during the last twenty months, the government has started record number of projects in different fields which will bring prosperity and improve the lot of the people. He said the bridge project was the longstanding demand of the people of the area and it will connect the provinces of Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan, bring the people of the three provinces closer together and promote trade and business activities.
He said Pakistan Peoples Party is the symbol of federation and the name of a Tehreek and it has always worked for the empowerment of masses. He said Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Benazir Bhutto gave their lives for the rights and emancipation of people and their dreams in this regard will be fulfilled at all costs.
Referring to the problems of Southern Punjab, the Prime Minister said all the promises made for the development of the area by Shaheed Benazir Bhutto will be materialized and various projects including roads and bridges are under construction to address the deprivation of the people. He referred to the projects recently inaugurated by President Asif Ali Zardari in Southern Punjab and expressed the confidence that these will usher in a new era of development.
He said a training institute will be set up in the area and besides education, the students will be provided with stipends. He said he will also direct the provincial government to withdraw all the fake cases registered in the disturbances following the martydrom of Benazir Bhutto.
The Prime Minister also declared Chachran Sharif as a model village wherein all the civic facilities including health, education and road infrastructure will be provided. On the demand of the local people, the Prime Minister renamed the Nashtar Ghat bridge as Shaheed Benazir Bhutto bridge.
He said that a bridge over river Sutlaj near Uch Sharif and another over river Chenab at Muhammad Wala near Multan are being constructed which will play important role in the development of the area.
Minister for Communications Arbab Jehangir speaking on the occasion said the present government in pursuance of the vision of its Shaheed leaders has taken concrete steps to put the country on the path of development and improve the lot of common man. He said the communication sector is the backbone of any economy and the government is spending huge funds for the development of road infrastructure to promote trade and economic activities.
Referring to the challenge of extremism and terrorism, the Minister said unlike the previous regimes, the present government took this challenge head on and has achieved major successes in the war against terrorists. He expressed the confidence that soon the country will be purged of the terrorists, enabling the people to live a peaceful life.
Health Minister Makhdoom Shahbuddin said the bridge project was conceived during the Benazir Bhutto's government and funds were allocated in 1996. He regretted that the project was not implemented which deprived the people the area. He thanked the Prime Minister for taking interest in the development of the area.
