ISLAMABAD, Jan 14 : Minister for Labour and Manpower Syed Khursheed Shah has said that the government is working on various programmes for the welfare of the labourers according to the vision of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto.
Replying to questions in National Assembly Thursday evening, the Minister said that a programme has been chalked out to construct eighty-four thousand houses during five years which will be provided to the labourers free of cost.
He said three thousand houses would be completed in Lahore this year while ten thousand houses are being constructed in Multan, Taxila, Rahim Yar Khan and Faisalabad. He said that the heirs of the workers who died during his employment would be paid three hundred thousand rupees as compensation. He said a proposal is also under consideration for the insurance of the workers.
Minister for Overseas Pakistanis Dr. Farooq Sattar informed the House that twentuy-one schools and three colleges have been set up to provide quality education to the children of the overseas Pakistanis. He said two more educational institutions would be constructed in Lahore and Karachi by the overseas Pakistanis Foundation. He said that government has fixed a target of twelve billion dollars remittances during the current year. He said the country received the remittances of seven billion dollars last year.
Minister for Water and Power Raja Pervez Ashraf informed the House that the government has chalked out a comprehensive plan to meet the shortage of the electricity. He said besides thermal and hydel power projects, the government is also concentrating on the coal based power projects. He said in this regard an MOU has been signed with China for development of Thar Coal Project having capacity of six hundred megawatt generation. The project would cost three billion dollars.
The Minister said the loadshedding could not be ended due to delay in installation of Rental power Projects because of financial constraints and testing of IPPs due to non-availability of gas during winter months.
He said a number of steps have also been taken to control and reduce the transmission and distribution losses to minimize the load-shedding.
The Minister informed that the feasibility study report has been completed for the construction of Kohala Hydro power project with a capacity of 100 MW of electricity over Jhelum River in district Muzaffarabad.
He said the Alternate Energy Development Board has initiated the Parliamentarian Sponsored Village Electrification Programme for electrification of villages in their respective constituencies.
He said three schemes have so far been approved and funds amounting to over seventeen million rupees against two schemes and thirty million rupees have been approved against third scheme. He said the schemes are very successful in parts of Sindh province where the WAPDA system is unavailable. INP
