KARACHI,: Pakistan readymade garments manufacturer and exporters association PRGMEA has strongly condemn the cabinet committee on textile’s decision to not to cap or ban the unchecked export of yarn from the country which would lead to closure of value added textile sector and leave thousands of workers jobless.
In a statement issued today, Chairman Pakistan readymade garments manufacturer and exporters association Mohsin Ayub Mirza said that this decision is like a brutal murder of value added sector. “This way we are closing doors for trade with other countries and would always looking for aid to survive which is totally contradictory to president n prime minister’s policy of trade not aid” , he remarked.
The markets in Europe right now are under recession and they could not afford to increase prices neither can allow extended delivery dates. Shorter lead times could have helped Pakistani exporters to fetch the foreign orders but the non-availability of yarn has not only made it impossible but country would also lose substantial export from the sector.
He said that Government is loosing a big chance of earning foreign exchange through value added export by allowing the export of yarn to our competitors who already have several advantages over us.
Mohsin said that once an export market is lost, there would be no way to recapture it and we would not be left with any other option but to repent and face the bitter joblessness in an already bad economic condition.
Chairman PRGMEA said that a Government which is already trying hard to create employment should not take such decisions that would lead to closure of value added industry and workers and employers of this sector are already in a chaotic situation after this decision since yarn prices have increased considerably after this surprise decision.
Mohsin said that rulers should have made decision which is partial and pragmatic in order to provide level playing field to all business segments but it seems that Government is under severe pressure of spinners whose number is handful & they work for their benefits only.
He said that in light of this decision value added sector is foreseeing massive unemployment which would result in serious law and order situation as already seen in Faisalabad. He appealed to Prime Minister and President to intervene in this situation and instruct the ministry of textile and commerce to ban the export of yarn for at least three months in order to provide the value added sector much needed breather.
