400 Shops Burned after Karachi Blast

KARACHI: At least 30 people were killed and more than 80 wounded as a bombs went off in 10th Muharram's main mourning procession near Light House on MA Jinnah Road of the metropolis.

A procession was passing from M.A Jinnah Road as the explosion occurred with loud blast. At least 30 people have been killed and more than 80 wounded in the incident.

Violence broke out in the aftermath of the bombing, with shots fired into the air and outraged Shiites hurling stones at security forces who had been guarding the march for their failure to prevent it.

After Monday's blast, protesters set fire to two buildings at Light House market and several vehicles, smashing shops as others at the procession attempted to stop them. Police and paramilitary troops fired into the air to disperse the crowd. sources said some 400 shops and 50 cars burned by angry persons.

Provincial Health Minister Sagheer Ahmad says the bombing has killed 20 people and wounded 80, adding many of the wounded are in critical condition and the death toll could rise.

As many as 40 injured were shifted to the Civil Hospital, 40 to Jinnah Hospital while two injured taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, he said, adding that all the injured will be provided full medical treatment and Sindh government will bear the expenses of their treatment.

Live television footage showed an explosion striking the procession on a main road, and ambulances rushing to and from the scene.

The procession continued to move forward despite the explosion. It culminated at Hussainain Iranian Imambargah at Kharadar.

Bomb disposal squad official Munir Sheikh said some 35 pounds (16 kilograms ) of high explosive were used in the bombing.
